LUIS RODRÍGUEZ NARANJO

ARTIST STATEMENT
I was born into a family of pig farmers, a family business that existed long before I was born. Since childhood, the pig has been more than just an economic livelihood: it has been part of my family life, of my memories on the farm, of conversations with my father, and of the social and cultural environment around me. Everyday objects, the importance of pig farming in my city, and even the culinary tradition of pork, gradually shaped my identity. In this way, the pig became a symbol of heritage, belonging, and rootedness.
Over time, I adopted it as the visual and conceptual axis of my work. My creative process begins by “pig-ifying” what I observe: objects, characters, everyday scenes, or even external proposals. In an instant, something captures my attention and, consciously or unconsciously, I transform it into a pig: sometimes drastically, integrating all of its defined traits; other times more subtly, building the image with only its essence. Either way, the pig is always present: whatever sparked my curiosity has been pig-ified.
An important part of my creative proposal has been this curiosity, which has led me to explore the works of artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Haring, and many others, immersing myself in their languages to adapt them into my pig-ified universe. It is not parody or mockery, but rather a way to recreate and re-signify through benevolent irony, expanding the scope of my own imagination.
Ultimately, any reinterpretation or pig-ified creation within my world functions as a mirror, because what I materialize in my work is reinterpreted differently by each viewer, depending on their cultural and emotional relationship with the pig. Thus, what may seem harmonious or poetic to some might appear grotesque or satirical to others. Moreover, the pig carries a wealth of meanings with both positive and negative connotations, which reinforces its symbolic richness.
For me, the pig represents abundance in multiple senses: economic, sentimental, cultural, and biological. It embodies the family legacy of pig farming, its productive versatility, and its deep symbolic weight across different cultures. But above all, I see the pig as a mirror: every person who encounters a pig-ified work projects onto it their own beliefs, experiences, and values. In that reflection, my personal world becomes an invitation for others to recognize themselves, to question themselves, or simply to allow themselves to see from another perspective.
